Mitchell Trophy Bridge of Weir 1 Queen's 2
"Queen's lived up to their reputation as cup fighters when they defeated the hitherto unbeaten Bridge of Weir team in the first round of the Mitchell Trophy.
Bridge of Weir began full of confidence but they received a rude shock when young W Fullerton to advantage of slackness in G D Rowley's part to give A N McPhie a hard drive to save. The brothers Muirhead tried hard to get the league leaders moving but to no purpose. Queen's played the steadier game albeit A J Tingley was closely guarded by Rowley. A goalless first period closed with A R Bazin making a great effort to open Queen's account but McPhie got down to his low drive in time.
The second period was very fast. Bridge of Weir showed better form and Queen's defence was beset by the thrusts of Rowley and W M Muirhead. In fact, it came as a surprise when Tingley led Queen's to the other end and outpacing J K Woodrow shot out of McPhie's reach. Hardly had the applause died down when the same player connected with a pass from Fullerton to steady and score a second goal for Queen's. Bridge of Weir were nettled and were correspondingly ineffective especially going forward.
The last period opened briskly with Bridge of Weir attacking but G R Forsyth and Bazin were steady and no shot of scoring power reached F L Reardon. In Bridge of Weir's next attack, Rowley essayed a shot which Reardon knocked aside but before the Queen's defence could cover up W M Muirhead scored with a high shot. In the next move he almost scored from twenty yards with a hard shot which skimmed the bar.
Queen's were worthy winners, Bridge of Weir failing to produce their true form. For Queen's, Tingley, Fullerton and Bazin were outstanding."
